CARPE DIEM! - A Celebration of Broadway Songs Old & New

WSU Department of Music

Music Theatre Workshop

Presents

CARPE DIEM!

Celebrating Broadway Songs Old and New

The fall presentation of CARPE DIEM! Celebrating Broadway Songs Old and New, is our fifth annual fall production bringing musicals to our community and to area students.

A musical revue, this production provides students with the opportunity to sing songs from Broadway shows they may never perform in. It will feature songs from popular Broadway shows such as Kiss Me Kate, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Cabaret, Chicago, Pippin, Assassins, West Side Story and many more. These songs express the hopes and dreams of the characters as they face the realities of life.

The performance features students from the Music Theatre Workshop, an academic course offered by the music department to develop their music theatre performance skills. The class is offered by the Music Department under the direction of Dr. Sabine Macris Klein and introduces WSU students and the community to opera and music theatre through live performance. Past productions have included: Amahl and the Night Visitors, Sweeney Todd, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, Cabaret, Hansel & Gretel, Billy Goat Guff, The Magic Flute and Fiddler on the Roof.

The production is directed by WSU theatre program faculty, Dr. Sabine Macris Klein, with piano accompaniment by Scott Bailey. Design and technical production support is provided by Ernie Iannaccone, WSU Technical Director. The show is also being presented for free for middle school students from the Westfield Public Schools. Funding for student bussing is made possible thanks to Barbara Trant of Westfield VIPS (Volunteers in the Public Schools).

Public performances will be held on Saturday, November 1st and Sunday, November 2nd at 2pm in Dever Stage at Westfield State University. Tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for students and senior citizens. Tickets can be purchased online at deverstage.

This production provides an opportunity for the university to offer arts programming for the community and the opportunity for students to attend a cultural event in a professional setting at the school matinee. Dever Stage is an intimate 526 seat proscenium theatre and we hope to provide a unique musical experince for all.

   Avenue Q

Music and Lyrics by  Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx
Book by  Jeff Whitty
Based on an original concept by Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx

Two Acts, Book Musical, Rated R
Full Version

AVENUE Q is a gut-bustingly hilarious modern musical focusing on a group of unique 20-somethings making their way in the big city, seeking their purpose in life. Although the show addresses humorous adult issues, it is similar to a beloved children's show;  a place where puppets are friends, Monsters are good and life lessons are learned. Winner of the Tony "Triple Crown" for Best Musical, Best Score and Best Book, AVENUE Q is part flesh, part felt, and packed with heart. AVENUE Q is a laugh-out-loud musical that tells the timeless story of a recent college grad named Princeton who moves into a shabby New York apartment all the way out on Avenue Q. He soon discovers that although the residents seem nice, it's clear that this is not your ordinary neighborhood. Together, Princeton and his new-found friends struggle to find jobs, dates, and their ever-elusive purpose in life.- See more at: http://www.mtishows.com/show_detail.asp?showid=000321#sthash.L42owGx3.dpufMusic and Lyrics by  Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx
